Activities
by Shodor - lots of interesting java based problems and
challenges. See examples below.
- Fraction
Sorter - This activity allows the user to
enhance their skills working with fractions by first making fractions
by cutting squares or circles into parts (this correlates with the
denominator) and then coloring in the correct portions (this correlates
to the numerator). They then place these fractions in order from least
to greatest.
- Balance
Beam Activity - Use basic equation principles
with the virtual Balance to find the weights of various figures. You
are presented with a number of shapes and one of their weights is
known. Your goal is to find the weights of the other objects by finding
the relationships between the objects of various weights. This is
achieved with a simulation of a balance beam to tell you how the
weights relate.
- Another version of the Balance Applet.
- David's Game - A game of chance.
- Number
(Decimal) Guess - Guess a number between 1 and
10. (EM 2.2)
- Deci
Darts - pop a balloon that "lives" on a number line
between 0 and 1
by entering numbers in decimal form. (EM 2.2)
- Fraction
Darts - pop a balloon that "lives" on a number line
between 0 and 1
by entering numbers in fraction form. (EM 4.2)
- Number
Town - It's time for all numbers in Fractionville
to return home to their respective color pads. What do the fractions on
each color pad have in common? (EM 4.2)
- Billiards - predict the
final destination of a billiard ball. Use your proportional thinking
for this one. (EM 4.12)
- Factor
Game - a great way to review primes, composites,
and factors.
- Coin Flipper -
Simulates coin flips (for TM 9.4 Streaks activity)
- Rolling Dice
(EM 7.3) - bar graph simulation for rolling 1, 2, or 3 dice.
- The West Game and Challenge (TM 4.1)

- Also play the West Return
game - going backwards from Great Gulch and learn about
negative numbers!
