Air Pollution: What's the Solution?

What Do You Know?

--> What do I already know about outdoor air pollution?

 Air pollution is separated into two major categories, Indoor Air Pollution and Outdoor Air Pollution. The Air Pollution: What's the Solution? project curriculum addresses outdoor air pollution.

Procedure

  1. Suggested questions to prompt the student brainstorming session about What They Know about air pollution:
    • What is outdoor air pollution?
    • What do you think causes outdoor air pollution?
    • Where does outdoor air pollution come from?
    • Have you ever seen air pollution? How do you know? Was there smoke coming out of a smokestack, or tailpipe? Could you smell it?
    • Is air pollution a solid, a liquid or a gas?
    • Where do you think you can get information about air pollution?
    • Do you think human beings are affected by air pollution? How?
    • What else do you think might be affected by air pollution?
    • Why do you think air pollution is measured?
    • How can we get rid of outdoor air pollution?
    • Have you heard the term ozone before? Do you know that there are two types of ozone? High level and ground level ozone?
    • Have you heard about particle pollution before?
    • Do you think particles floating in the air can effect humans? How?
    • How do you think the particles get into the air?
     
  2. Once students have finished sharing What They Know about air pollution, ask the students what they Would Want to Find Out. Try to guide the questions to match the topics covered in the balance of the lessons. For example:
    • What are the most common outdoor air pollutants?
    • Can any of these pollutants be found in our area?
    • What effects might air pollutants have on humans or other animals?
    • What effects might air pollution have on plants?
    • Where do air pollutants come from?
    • Is there anything we can do to reduce the amount of air pollution?
    • Why do certain regions of the country have different ozone levels?
    • What conditions/factors help to form ground level ozone?
    • Why are high ozone levels considered to be unhealthy?
    • Is exposure to ground level ozone a considerable health risk?
    • Who do you think might benefit from ground level ozone education?
    • Why should citizens take steps to reduce ground level ozone production?
    • Where does particle pollution come from?
    • What could citizens do to reduce the amount of particle pollution?
