Water Purification : A Systems and Global Engineering Project

In this telecollaborative project, you will study technologies related to water purification. You will explore the need for clean water and the issues related to contaminated water, including treatment options. Ultimately, you will collaborate with students from another class to design and produce a water purification and delivery system to be used in a developing country.

Week 1

Write and submit a class Letter of Introduction to Collaboration Central. Things to inlcude in the letter of introduction are:

  • Name of school, subject, and grade level of class.
  • Location of school including city, state/province, country, latitude and longitude (so other students can pin-point your location on the map).
  • What are school's strengths?
  • What are school's weaknesses?
  • What technological resources are available?
  • What can your school most contribute to this effort?
  • What are your goals and expectations in participating in this collaborative effort?
  • What do you wish to learn from this first meeting?
  • Any other information that you would like to share about your city, school, and community.
Weeks 2-4

Lesson 1: What water contaminants do we find in water? Post a blog on various water contaminants to a blog. Post a link or upload one class-selected Public Service Announcement to Collaboration Central.

Lesson 2: What methods are there for removing water contaminants? Post a link or upload one class-selected video recording of a presentation made to a utility company to educate them on methods for removing contaminants from water.

Lesson 3: What systems exist for removing water contaminants? Post a proposal to Collaboration Central that includes a set of working drawings, plan of procedures, flow chart to show system function, Bill of Materials, cost analysis and 3D model.

Weeks 5-6

Final Project : Each partner team submits a final report to Collaboration Central that discusses the science behind the water clean up, the design of the solution, the materials available and used and the construction of the prototype. Describe the successes and/or challenges you had in producing the final water purification system. Provide suggestions for re-design.
