Final Report - June, 2003

Central Middle School (6th grade), Plymouth, MI, USA

During the project we studied the sunset and sunrise times.

We studied the temperature and determined the number of minutes of sunlight per day by using information off the internet.

We interpreted our results by looking at the location and found that as latitudes increase, temperatures decrease. We also saw that as latitude increases, daylight minutes increase. Some places are hotter than others because they are closer to the equator and receive more of the sun's direct rays. We also discussed that higher latitudes are just moving into the warmer seasons and that if we were to do this same project in July, our temperatures (Michigan) would be similar to those further south. Some areas of the Earth receive more daylight than others because of the earths tilted axis. Our days are getting longer as the northern hemisphere tilts more towards the sun. As we receive more light over longer period of time, our temperatures will increase. While our daylight hours will decrease after the 1st day of summer, the days will still be much longer than they are in the winter.

It was interesting looking at information from students across the world!

Sincerely,
6th grade class of Ms. Wehner
