Final Report - December, 2003

Central Elementary (5th grade), Calhoun, LA, USA

We are the 5th grade gifted science class at Central Elementary in Calhoun, LA, USA. Our latitude is 32 degrees north.

During the Sun Times Project, we measured the temperature and daylight minutes. We averaged each. To measure daylight minutes, we went online and got the sunrise and sunset times for one year. To get the temperature, we set up a weather station and checked the temperature daily for the assigned week.

We learned that the cities that are closer to the equator receive more sunlight minutes, because they receive more direct rays than cities further from the equator. Some of these cities along the equator are in different biomes and that makes a difference too. We made graphs on the computer using Apple Works and found the lines of best fit to interpret our results.

Next time we would like to try this project in the sun not shade. Also we want to e-mail different schools and ask them questions about their schools. We really had fun with this project.
