Final Report - December, 2003

Desert Mountain School (4th Grade), Desert Hills, Phoenix, AZ, USA

Hi everyone!

We are a class of 4th graders from Desert Mountain School in Desert Hills(Phoenix), AZ.

We started off the project in the computer lab where we read through some of the schools' letters of introduction. We were amazed at all of the variety of schools, what countries they were in, and how they described their part of the world. Next, we learned a little bit about latitude & longitude. It was confusing at first but we managed to get through the lessons okay. After we felt a little more comfortable with reading latitude/longitude it was time to check the temperature & sunlight times. We used a regular thermometer to check the temp & we used the newspaper(Arizona Republic) to get the sunrise/sunset times. We had to calculate the number of minutes using those 2 times. At the end of the week we had fun learning how to do averages.

Finally, our teacher made a packet of all the schools' verfied data. We chose several schools & plotted them on the graphs. We noticed that latitude does affect your sunlight & temperature. We learned already in Social Studies that the further away from the equator you are, the cooler you become. The graph confirmed that for us. We also noticed a strong relationship between latitude & the # of minutes of sunlight. The Temp vs. Latitude graph was a stronger relationship though.

We had so much fun doing this project & we hope you did too!

Take care!!
