Garden Elementary School (5th

Final Report
We are reporting for Mrs. Bradly’s 5th grade Advance Work Class. We’re
reporting from Garden Elementary School in Venice, Florida, USA (27.1º N.
latitude, 82.4º W. longitude). We are doing this experiment as part of our
science class.
This project ran from November 3 - 7. To measure the temperature, we took
the daily temperature between 11 AM and 1 PM, (we used 12 noon), using a
digital thermometer. To find the number of minutes of sunlight we used a
source on the internet that gave us a calendar of sunrise/sunset times.
After reviewing the collected data, we were able to clearly see that the
average number of minutes of daylight during the week was much greater in
the southern hemisphere. In fact, the further south we went the more
daylight minutes increased, and the further north we traveled using our
data, the less daylight minutes. After some research we were not surprised
by this data because in the fall the Earth is tilted in a way that puts
the southern hemisphere closer to the sun, and the northern hemisphere is
tilted away.
When we compared the temperature vs. the latitude we had thought the
locations near the equator would be warmer, and the data proved this to be
true. We also discovered that the southern hemisphere temperatures were
warmer than the northern hemisphere temperatures, again due to the tilt of
the Earth on it’s axis.
