Final Report - December, 2003

Ruth M. Buck School, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

Ruth M. Buck is a K-8 school situated in the northwest part of the city of Regina, province of Saskatchewan, Canada.
We found this project to be interesting apart from the data on climate. How many schools would register? How many continents/countries/provinces/states would be represented? Who would be furthest north? south?
closest to the equator?
The week of Nov. 3 to Nov. 7 was colder than normal for Regina. We used the local newspaper (Leader-Post) to determine the temperature and minutes of sunlight for each day.
Our analysis showed an almost straight "trend line" through the plotted points indicating a strong relationship between the variables latitude and minutes of sunshine. This was what we expected to find.
Temperature vrs. latitude was tougher to read. We saw a strong, steep trend line between the points in northern latitudes between 30-50 degrees. We saw a strong but flat trend line between latitudes 42S to about 15N. We thought this showed a more even temperature distribution due to closeness to the equator and summer season in the southern hemisphere.
An interesting project! Room 8
