South Middle School (8th
Grade), Grand Forks, ND, USA
South Middle School is grades 6-8 in Grand
Forks, North Dakota. The 8th grade Earth Science class that participated
in this project consisted of 12 students.
During the project the class researched some geographic areas of the other
schools.
The week we took measurements was really cold. We used the local newspaper
(Grand Forks Herald) to find the sunrise and sunset each day. For the
temperature we have a wireless weather station in the classroom to record
our observations. It was good practice converting the temperature from
fahrenheit to celcius.
Through our data analysis we found that schools closer to the equator have
warmer temperatures and more minutes of daylight. Because of more direct
rays from the sun the equatorial region and southern hemisphere seem to be
warmer.
We used Appleoworks spreadsheet programs to graph results from 10
different schools.
So things that we learned was how to convert temperatures, and the fast
rate at which we are losing daylight. The students would like to do this
and see results if this project would be done in the Spring.
