Final Report - December, 2003

Treasure Mountain Middle School (6th grade), Park City, Utah, USA

My school is located in Park City, in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. I go to Treasure Mountain Middle School at 2530 Kearns Blvd., 84060. In the sixth grade, my grade, this project was done in our IB science class.

During this project we did tons of activities. We wrote a letter of
introduction and posted it on the Sun Times's website, then we took info from 4 other schools and recorded it. With the info we got from other schools we plotted their positions on a world map. The temperature we took for 5 days was recorded along with the minutes per day. We found the daylight minutes from the local newspaper. We found the number of daylight
minutes the first day by adding them up, and then every day after that we subtracted minutes when sunrise came later and sunset earlier. Then we added minutes to the day for every minute sunrise was earlier and the first time, and when sunset was later.

We don't receive much sunlight in the winter months because of our position in the Northern Hemisphere. The Equator is the warmest place on Earth because it is never tilting away from the sun, warming some areas and cooling others, depending on the time of year. Our results showed us being cooler at this time of year because we are currently tiling away from the
sun.

I learned lots of things on this project. I learned how to interpret,
use, and transfer to Fahrenheit scale with Celsius. I learned where to earn different daylight info, and what to do with it. Next time I would like to email other countries and schools.

Holiday...

The holiday I picked is Christmas. Christmas is celebrated on the same day every year. This day is December twenty ˆfifth.
The weather for this holiday really depends on where you live. However this is basically a winter holiday and commonly known to be snowing at this time. This is the exact weather I receive for this holiday, because I live in Park City.
The traditions my family has for this holiday is always going to church on this day or the night before on Christmas Eve. Also we usually always have brunch with other families and friends. However commonly known traditions are putting up a Christmas tree. Then you decorate the Christmas tree with lights and ornaments and sometimes even popcorn! Also you usually put lights outside on your house. Last the most commonly known thing for Christmas is that Santa Claus comes. Santa lives in the North Pole and on Christmas Eve goes around in his sled with his reindeer giving out presents. He also has a list that he checks to see if you‚ve been naughty or nice. So you better be good!
The special music we usually listen to on Christmas include carols, and winter and Christmas songs. Some examples of these songs are: O‚ Christmas Tree, Santa Claus is coming to town, Little Drummer boy, etc.
At Christmas time we eat a lot of food! Some very common foods are ham and roast beef on Christmas day. Around Christmas people usually make and eat Christmas cookies. Somethimes people use a cookie cutter shaped in Christmas picture shapes.
During this holiday people usually wear green and red. These colors represent Christmas.
