Name: Costas Chassapis

Position: Department Director

Department: Mechanical Engineering

What I do:

I teach courses to students who want to become Mechanical Engineers, on how products such as automobiles, cranes, robots, coffee makers, etc.. are designed and manufactured. I spend a lot of time discussing with them the methods, the tools and the technologies that are being used in the design and fabrication of these products. Using all of these they design products of increased complexity, built prototypes and outline the factory plans that are needed to make these products. In my research, I concentrate on developing technologies and tools that will allow us to provide a greater variety of more complex products at a lower cost, with better quality that last longer.

What I like most about my job:

I enjoy interacting, guiding and advising undergraduate and graduate students both in the classroom and within my research group. It is indeed very rewarding. I also feel that I have freedom to work and innovate on subjects within my areas of interest and expertise. In doing so, I do not feel constrained by "the way things are customarily done" and always look for how they ought to be. Looking for "cool innovative ways" to accomplish research and educational goals is always exciting.
