Engineering... at Stevens

A Brief History
Stevens is named for a distinguished family who perpetuated a tradition in American engineering, dating back to the early days of the Industrial Revolution. John Stevens, a colonel in the Revolutionary War, purchased from the State of New Jersey in 1784 the land included in the present-day 55-acre campus of the college. Before 1800, Col. Stevens was a pioneer in the development of the steamboat, and by 1825 he had designed the first American-built steam locomotive… more

Stevens Mission Statement
Stevens Institute of Technology educates and inspires students to acquire the knowledge needed to lead in the creation, application and management of technology and excel in solving problems in any profession.

The undergraduate curriculum is built on a multidisciplinary core in the applied sciences, computer science, business, engineering and the liberal arts, stressing the fundamental concepts, techniques and attitudes that underlie different branches of technology… more

George P. Korfiatis, Dean
School of Engineering
“Solving the complex problems we face as a nation—from pioneering innovations that promote economic growth, to advancing the frontiers of medicine and healthcare that increase the quality of life, to ensuring enhanced national security—will depend on a highly qualified pool of technical talent. In order to meet these needs, we as a nation must attract and nurture young students to traditional and emerging fields of engineering.

Only by sharing the excitement and impact of engineers and engineering with K-12 students and teachers will we succeed in meeting this critical national challenge.”

The School of Engineering is dedicated to providing students with the knowledge required to lead in their chosen profession and to provide a platform for continued personal and professional evolution. Stevens School of Engineering offers undergraduate programs in the following disciplines:

• Chemical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• Computer Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Engineering Management
• Environmental Engineering
• Biomedical Engineering   (interdisciplinary)

These programs are built upon an extensive core curriculum of science, engineering science, humanities, management and physical education courses to provide students with a strong undergraduate foundation.

Faculty Research
The School of Engineering is home to a spectrum of exciting research programs. While encouraging strong individual faculty research, the School has a number of research focus areas that bring groups of faculty and students together in a synergetic manner to address major topics of importance to the nation and the world at large. Some of these initiatives are still at a formative stage; others have matured into research centers. The institution encourages a significant level of faculty interaction across departmental boundaries that can facilitate the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of leading edge research.

The School of Engineering encourages undergraduate students to participate in faculty-mentored research or design. Through such experience, it is possible to determine if students have the interest and talent to continue into graduate research. Research allows students to experience the thrill of creating new scientific or technical knowledge…. more

The Senior Design Project
The capstone senior design project is intended to be the culmination of the undergraduate experience, where knowledge gained in the classroom is applied to a major design project. The majority of senior projects are sponsored or defined and mentored in collaboration with an industrial partner. This provides meaningful projects of value to the sponsor, and it imbues a professional orientation in the student team as they work towards providing the sponsor with deliverables in a manner that simulates the environment in which they will shortly be operating. At the same time, the project is crafted to meet the educational goals of the capstone design course, which runs the full senior year.

Technogenesis
Imagine bringing together in one classroom the top minds in industry, the best university researchers and teachers, and the brightest students, and having them collaborate on today's greatest technological challenges. This revolutionary approach to learning is Technogenesis.

Only Stevens offers this unique educational environment where students, faculty and industry work closely together, sharing ideas and nurturing technology from innovation to implementation… more
