Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program. If you have a computer at home, you may have Microsoft Works or Clarisworks which are also spreadsheet programs and work very similarly to Excel. Spreadsheets are used to deal with lots of  numbers in a quick and efficent way. Jobs that work with a lot of moneyy such as accountants use lots of spreadsheets. They are also useful for keeping track of statistics for sports and grades.

Let's learn to use Excel. Use your mouse to click on the start button  on your computer. Go to programs. You shuld be able to see the Excel icon now. It is an aqua blue X with the workds Microsofte Excel next to it. Click on this program to start. The program will open you will see a page full of boxes (*these are cells) entitled Book 1 (or 2 or 3, etc.) This is the spreadsheet.  Across the top of the page are letters that name the column below them. Along the side are numbers that name the row beside them. Each cell has a specific and unique address that consists of the letter of the column and the number of the row. (This is kind of like the game Battleship if you have ever played.) For instance, the very first boxd in the upper left hand corner is cell A1. The cell next to it is cell B1. Click you mouse on cell C12. A little bit below the word Edit you should see C12. Click that box and change your location to B9 by typing B9. It is easiest to use your arrow keys to move on a spreadsheet  as opposed to your mouse. Use your left and up arrow keys to move back to A1.

1. The boxes on a spreadsheet are called __________________.

2. The cell to the right of C1 is ____________.

3. The cell just below A8 is ________.

4. The cell to diagonally down and to the righ of B3 is _________.

Make sure that cell A1 is highlighted and type: This is (your name)'s spreadsheet.  Hit enter. What you typed should apear in the first cell and carry over into cell B1. Yse your arrow kesys to move and print the following letters in the following cells: H in B4; I in B5 and C4; A in B6; S in B4, C5 & C6; T in A4; E in A6; Y in D6.
