Battin Middle School Students Finish 3th, 4th, 5th and 10th Place in New Jersey Stock Market Game!

George Ciggelakis, Advisor. Charles Elmore III, Jeffrey Lopez Mark Olaechea, Anthony Martinez and Deborah DeMattia, Principal of Battin Middle School.

On February 20th through April 27th of this year, a ten-week period, Battin Middle School’s eighth grade class competed in a stock market game.  Our third-place finishing students were under the supervision of Mrs. Deborah DeMattia, Principal of Battin; Mr. George Ciggelakis and Mr. Schwarzberg, Algebra I math teachers at Battin; and Mr. Ihor Charischak, project manager at CIESE – Center  for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education at Stevens Institute.  A financial grant from the MATRIX Project funded our chance to realize individual and team excellence.
Mrs. DeMattia advised Mr. Ciggelakis to enroll Battin’s eighth grade teams into The Stock Game, sponsored by the New Jersey Council on Economic Education.  The Game is an on-line educational educational simulation that teaches students about the stock market, the American economic system, and the global economy.  Teams of four students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in a portfolio of stocks.  To assist the students in choosing their stocks they used the internet to become more familiar with their stocks and possible future stock investments.  For ten weeks students followed their portfolios, researched stocks, entered trades, and checked their weekly rankings against all teams competing in their division.

The New Jersey Stock Market Game included over 25,000 students – the youngest were fourth graders through the oldest at college level.  Stock Market Game has given students the opportunity to participate in New Jersey for over 25 years.
Our eighth graders competed in the Northern Division, consisting on 210 middles schools located in  Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren Counties. The top three teams in the Northern Region were invited to attend an awards luncheon on May 14, 2007 at Kean University.  All winning teams were awarded prizes and were required to make a presentation explaining their strategies, disclosing their chosen stocks, and revealing their learned experience from the Stock Market Game.

Battin was very proudly represented by four teams placing in the final top ten.  Placing 10th was team 1962 from homeroom 323.  Placing 5th was team 1951 from homeroom 311.  Finishing 4th was team was team 1946.   Team 1948, comprised of Charles Elmore III, Mark Olaechea, Jeffrey Lopez, and Anthony Martinez came in third place in the Northern Division.  This outstanding team invested in Microsoft, Apple, Google, IBM, and Goldman Sachs.  This foursome from homeroom 309 realized a 10% return from their stock portfolio over the designated 10-week period. Congratulations to all for a job well done!
