Language Arts RWLO Reading Current Events

Procedure

Time: Approximately 60 minutes

Materials: Internet Access or printouts of articles

Implementation: This RWLO could be used in class, or assigned for homework.

Steps:

Activity #1 Reading Newspapers Critically

Students will access the New York Times online and a newspaper from the Middle East. Students will read two accounts of the same news event and use several critical reading skills. Students will read to detect bias, determine point of view, distinguish fact from opinion, and learn to evaluate sources for their credibility. Students will also employ the skill of summarizing.

So that this assignment remains current, no specific articles are included for the reading. However, the teacher and students should have little difficulty in locating appropriate news articles from the suggested sources. The teacher may wish to pre-select articles if the students require more structure.
