Real World Learning Objects: Science

Measure Internet Transmission Speed Using ping

Student Learning Objectives

For this RWLO, the student will:

·        Use the ping facility of Windows XP (other computer OS also possible).

·        Identify an equivalence between a URL in domain name format and a numeric ip-address,

·        Measure the real-time speed of transmission of data to a designated internet node.

·        Use tracert (Windows XP) or traceroute (Linux) to measure number of routing “hops” to a target machine.

·        Observe established usage of ping as part of an online “Internet Weather Report” facility.

·        Recap results and form conclusions on possible causes of variations in internet transmission speed.
