“The Purloined Letter”

Recommendations

Recommendations for Integration:

·        This RWLO about Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Purloined Letter” can be used to supplement any high school or college reading or literature course that includes American authors.   A similar RWLO could be created using short stories by other authors, such as O’Henry, master of the surprise ending.

Back-up:

·        Hard copies of the story found on the Internet should be available, as well as hard copies of Scholastic’s abridged version of  “The Purloined Letter.”

·        Students could use pagers, such as Sidekicks, to send messages about their conclusions if the Internet is unavailable in the classroom.  Regular mail could also be used as a last resort.
