Recommendations

Recommendations for Integration:

Familiarize yourself with the search engine; and find an example patent that is unique and compelling to your audience.  Using your example patent, illustrate the components of the patent that the students are accountable for identifying on the patent of their choice.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ALTERNATE STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS:

1.                  Identify a second patent that references the first and describe the relationship.

2.                  Let the students comment on the “validity” of a patent of their choice.

3.                  Students suggest a patentable invention.

4.                  Investigate the statistics of countries, companies, industries, etc who are getting the most patents.

Back-up:

The USPTO publishes a weekly gazette of patents granted that week that could be used in then event of the Internet being inaccessible.  This is not a good substitute for the online advanced searching capability of the USPTO site and should be used only as a last resort.
