Real World Learning Objects: Educational Technology
A Study of Diverse Populations Through the Creation of Charts and Graphs

Procedure

Time: Approximately 45 minutes.

Materials: Student Directions, Microsoft Excel Software, and computers with Internet.

Implementation: This RWLO should be used in the classroom to demonstrate the creation of charts and graphs. Students must work individually to properly develop the skills needed to create a chart and graph. Students may use the Excel Resources found in the Supplementary Resources.

Steps:
  1. Direct the students to the U.S. Census Bureau Website State and County Quick Facts and/or print the Student Directions for distribution.

  2. Direct students to develop chart and bar graph using the data provided above. Chart and Graph should look like this:

    Ethnicity Comparison Chart

    US

    Florida

    Miami- Dade

    65.40%

  3. Students will now reflect on:
  • How their county's ethnicity compare to the numbers of the US and their state? Were they surprised by the results?

  •   Have the students compare their results with their memories of what schools looked like when they were a student. If the schools of today are significantly different from the ones they remember, what will they need to do to prepare themselves for the diversity they are likely to encounter in the classroom?

  1. Extension Activities: Pre and Post Activities can be found in Recommendations.
