Alien Encounters: Writing about the "Other"

Student Learning Objectives

After completing this RWLO, the student will be able to:

  • Define the terms “ethnocentricity” and “xenophobia.”

  • Discuss the portrayal of Native Americans by the first European explorers and settlers, as well as Native descriptions of Europeans.

  • Critically examine contemporary descriptions of “the other” in writings on the UFO phenomenon.

  • Analyze similarities in the portrayal of the “other” in early American literature and contemporary discussion of aliens.

  • Reflect in writing on similarities between the description of “the other” by writers describing early encounters between Europeans and Native Americans and writers on the UFO phenomenon.

  • Draw a conclusion from this reflection, supporting it with relevant citations from the reading
