Scientific Issues to Consider in the Siting of New Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

  1. Topography: Identifies high and low lying areas, natural drainageways, and probable wetland locations.

  2. Vegetative Cover: Locate natural barriers and identify areas of critical habitat for endangered plants.

  3. Surface and Groundwater:  Map overland and groundwater flow and locate existing surface waters and wells.  Determine impact on water sources around possible landfill sites.

  4. Land Use: Identify current use of land to consider locating near compatible existing uses and away from incompatible existing uses.

  5. Wildlife:  Investigate area wildlife and to make sure not to harm any endangered species.

  6. Soil Type: Locate suitable soils types.
