A Crowded Landscape: Is There Room for Waste Management?

Links to Course Competencies

This RWLO could be used in an introductory environmental science course, a sophomore-level environmental technology course, a solid waste management course, and others.  It assumes that learners have basic microcomputer and Internet browsing skills. It would fit well in modules on environmental policy and decisionmaking, municipal waste management, overpopulation, and landfill construction technology.

Specifically, this RWLO meets the following course competencies:

  • Construct a list of regulatory, scientific, and non-scientific requirements and considerations for landfill siting.
  • Navigate electronic mapping resources and use them to aid decisionmaking.
  • Recognize the difficulty in managing environmental pollution after it is generated or "after the fact."
