A Crowded Landscape: Is There Room for Waste Management?

Student Learning Objectives

For this RWLO, the student will be able to:

  1. Locate the layer controls of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and manipulate them to display various map features.

  2. Given a list of issues and requirements for locating (or 'siting') new municipal solid waste landfill facilities (MSWLFs), locate map features that provide information needed in finding a suitable location for a MSWLF.

  3. Manipulate the layer controls of the GIS to display the map features of interest.

  4. Site a new (hypothetical) MSWLF in a county, township, or other political boundary.

  5. Present the selected location and its pros, cons, risks, and trade-offs to a mock group of concerned and/or affected citizens.
