In Search of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

  • Student Directions:

    Step 1:

    • Go to the British Library Website to access Shakespeare's Quartos and engravings with London's cityscapes and etchings of the theatre.
      • Go to "Background" to learn about the Globe Theatre.
      • Explore "Playhouses" section and make note of the images from the etchings and engravings
      • Select a Quarto of your choice from "Texts". Record the title and record your impressions.

    Step 2:

    • Use the following websites to gain more information about the Globe. Find additional images of the Globe Theatre. Compare images from the etchings and engravings (from step 1) to the photographs of the reconstructed building of the Globe.

    Step 3:

    • Go to the Google Earth website and download a free version of the software. Once the software is downloaded, go to London, England and then search for Bankside. Compare the image of this London neighborhood to the engraving from the British Library.

    Step 4:

    • Use the Literature Resource Center on the library website, under Language and Literature , to locate an article about the Globe Theatre. Look at the features of the database. Record your search strategy.

    Step 5:
    Prepare a two page minimum paper following the directions below:

    • Incorporate facts about the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre into a coherent and organized narrative

    • Compare images retrieved from the British Library website to the images of the rebuilt Globe Theatre from the official Globe Theatre website

    • Identify the Quarto you selected

    • Explain what constitutes primary resources

    • Share your experience using Google Earth; list several features

    • Include one image captured from Google Earth

    • List the features of the research database

    • Explain  your search strategy

    • Cite primary resources found on the Web, journal articles, and websites in MLA citation format
