1. Access the Centers for Disease Control website at  Find information about the avian H5N1 influenza epidemic. Write a short summary about the current status of the epidemic.


















2. In the space provided in the table below, write down the names of five countries that you want to track for number influenza infection cases.

3. Access the World Health Organization (WHO) Interactive Mapping website at and enter “Global Health Atlas” in the search box. Click on “Global Health Atlas” on the results list.

    a. Click on “Interactive Mapping”

     b. For “Choose a Category”, select  “Communicable Disease”

    c. For “Choose a topic”, select “Influenza”

    d. For “Choose an Item”, select “isolates obtained”

    e. Click on “Next”

     f. For “Choose an Administrative Level”, select “By country”

     g. For “Choose a Subgroup” , select “Total”

     h. Select “week 1” for the January influenza data and click on  “Add     

           Layer to Map”

i. After the colored map appears, click on “View Legend” and record the case  numbers for each of your selected countries on the table above.

j. After you have recorded the case numbers for each of your selected countries, click on “Remove Layer” and then “Add Data.”  Repeat steps b. through i. for weeks 15 (April), 29 (July), 42 (October) and the current week.


4. After analyzing the data that you recorded in step #3, answer the following questions:

a.      What are the global patterns of influenza infection?





b.      Based on your knowledge of the current status of the avian H5N1 influenza epidemic and your conclusions about the global patterns of influenza infection, when and how do you predict that the avian H5N1 influenza infection will spread? Include your rationale.





5. Search the Centers for Disease Control website   for information about epidemics and pandemics and answer the following questions:

     a. What is an epidemic?



     b. What is a pandemic?



    c. What criteria must the avian H5N1 influenza meet to be                                   

     considered a pandemic?





6. Explore the internet to identify national, state or local avian H5N1 influenza prevention strategies. List three strategies currently being implemented:
