Real World Learning Objects: Science

The Emerging Avian H5N1 Influenza

Procedure

Time: Approximately 2 hours

Materials: Computer with Internet access and Student Directions

Prerequisites: This activity is designed for students with basic computer skills and at least a 12th grade reading level.

Implementation: This RWLO may be implemented during class time or as a supplemental assignment. Students may work individually or in groups.

Steps:

  1. Each student should print a copy of the student worksheet.

  1. Students will examine the website for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and find information about the avian H5N1 influenza epidemic. Students will write a short summary of the current status of the epidemic.

  1. Students will access the World Health Organization (WHO) Interactive Mapping website. Influenza infection data are reported by the week. Students will document influenza infection in ten countries from around the world for each season of the year on the student worksheet. Students will analyze global patterns on influenza infection and formulate conclusions about the timing and spread of the avian H5N1 influenza.

  1. Students will search the CDC website for information about epidemics and pandemics and state what criteria the avian H5N1 influenza must meet to be considered a pandemic.

  1. Students will explore the Internet to identify national, state or local avian H5N1 influenza prevention strategies.
