Students from Manasquan, NJ measured the shadow length of a meter stick at local noon to be 80.5 cm. Using a calculator, they calculated a sun angle (CAB) of 38.8 using the formula below.  The protractor is demonstrating the angle that is to be calculated.

Sun angle (CAB)= tan -1 (shadow length in cm /100 cm )

= tan -1 (0.805 )

=38.8

The tangent of an angle in a right triangle is equal to the length of the opposite side divided by the adjacent.  Remember the rules for a right triangle?
