The Poisson Distribution

Simulation

The animation on the Overview page depicts a simulation of a Poisson process. You might think of it as a random distribution of wildlife in a forest, the emission of radioactive particles, the distribution of receptor cells in the retina or any process in which events occur randomly over a specified interval. If you drag the slider to the right you will see the following:

Record the number of points in each region to obtain the following:

Number  of points

0

1

2

3

Number of occurrences

11

9

3

2

Note: 11 regions with 0 points, 9 regions with 1 point, etc.

Perform a goodness-of-fit test for the Poisson model.
