Savvy Cyber Teacher®

Graduate Level, Hands-on Internet Training for K-12 Science and Mathematics Educators

Savvy Cyber Teacher® is a 30-hour teacher professional development program aimed at helping teachers utilize "unique and compelling" Internet-based resources to improve student learning in science, mathematics, language arts, literacy and other disciplines.

Curriculum materials focus on the use of real-time data and global telecollaboration to engage students in authentic, inquiry-based, quantitative scientific investigations.

Independent evaluations of Savvy Cyber Teacher®-trained educators show impact on student learning and teacher behavior. Customized, grade-appropriate versions are available for elementary, middle and high school teachers. The program has been used successfully by over 8,000 teachers in Arizona, Delaware, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

In addition to providing 30 hours toward New Jersey's 100 hour CEU requirement, three graduate credits are available.

  • Materials are aligned with National Science Education Standards (NSES), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards (NETS).
  • Training meets the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements for "Highly Qualified Teachers."

  • Independent evaluations by Educational Testing Service (ETS) and Harcourt Assessment show positive impact on teacher pedagogy and student achievement.
  • 86% of classes who participated in the Savvy Cyber Teacher® program demonstrated noteworthy gains in science and mathematics learning objectives.

Best Practices:

  • Lessons are inquiry-based.
  • Online curriculum incorporates project-based learning.
  • Participation in the training and utilization of CIESE materials develops higher-order thinking skills.
