MATHEMATICS Subject: Re: ENC article Date: Monday, February 17, 2003 10:36 AM From: george miller <gjmiii@hotmail.com> To: <icharisc@stevens-tech.edu> Now that my family and I have taken a break from the snow plowing/shoveling I have some time to sit down and send you some of my favorites. These are not in any special order. 1) http://math.rice.edu/~lanius/Lessons/index.html This is a great site because of a couple of lessons that she has created. I especially like the Rectangle Pattern Challenge because the students have to keep a record; find a pattern; make a prediction; and complete the graphs. Other good ones (with nice graphics, teacher notes, charts, etc.) are Ratios, Pattern Block Fractions, Fractions, and Slope. 2) http://www.k111.k12.il.us/king/math.htm This is a great site for links to elementary and middle school sites. Several are from the UK, and they are great. This school did their homework to the nth degree. The sites are broken into topics and include many of our favorites, like Funbrain, Mathforum, NCTM Illuminations and many others. If someone is looking for activities to bookmark so that their students can go to the computer for some great activities - this is the one! 3) http://www.funbrain.com This was one of my favorites until they sold out the quizlab portion and made it more difficult and unappealling. Still, the Funbrain portion has several great activities that are geared mainly for K-6. 4) http://www.purplemath.com A great tutorial with many excellent examples. Covers everything from the basic facts through calculus. An excellent place for students, and parents, to go when they cannot remember how to do a particular type of problem. 5) http://www.hamiltonschools.org/davies This is another site that is well prepared by a teacher. Following the prompts for GEPA problems you will find yourself with a link to sites that have GEPA type problems for the students to work online. A couple of the sites are devoted to the open-ended problems. There is one link that has 10 nice multiple choice problems and another with 40 online problems. 6) http://www.clevermedia.com In addition to the many games there is an interesting math activity called ADD IT UP. One nice feature is that even when the timer on the bonus points runs out the students must still come up with a combination that equals the target number. There is no real penalty for being slow. It certainly helped some of my students master their addition number facts. It can also be a competition for high score in each class. 7) http://www.cut-the-knot.com Loaded with many java applets. I especially like the Pick's Theorem program. Students use this to develop and illustrate the theorem. This is one site that you could spend years looking through each of their programs. 8) http://www.illuminations.nctm.org/index2.html Great lesson plans and worksheets. I especially like the Paper Pool activity. A nice application for GCF and LCM. Other favorites are the Factor Game and the Product Game. These are nice to play with markers but these versions allow students to play against the "computer". I hope this will be of some use. If you need any sites for a particular topic, let me know as I might have something handy. Enjoy the snow.......because it's going to be around for a while! Time to go out and do some more shoveling!
