NGSS Connections Workshops

Learn how to put the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into action through high leverage practices and engineering design. These interactive full-day introductory workshops will introduce teachers and school leaders to grade-specific science exemplars in a variety of topic areas along with strategies that embody the NGSS student performance expectations. Teachers will learn to engage students in learning through high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanation. The workshops feature grade-appropriate lessons that integrate applied science content within an engineering context. Any of these workshops may be offered as a multi-day, in-depth experience for teachers.

K-12

Introduction to the Next Generation Science Standards

The Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) present a new vision of science learning that integrates core disciplinary ideas, science and engineering practices, and cross-cutting concepts. In this interactive workshop, teachers and school leaders will come to understand the ideas behind NGSS and engage in cross-grade examples of learning activities that embody the NGSS student performance expectations. 

K-12

Evaluating and Selecting Appropriate STEM Curricula

Recommended for teachers who have experience implementing the NGSS. Teachers will learn how to use the Educators Evaluating the Quality of Instructional Products (EQuIP) rubric for STEM lessons and units. The rubric provides criteria by which to measure the alignment and overall quality of lessons and units with respect to the NGSS. 

K-5 Beyond the Basics – Integrating 3-Dimensional learning into your K-5 science classroom

This workshop is for teachers who are familiar with NGSS. It will explore how the 5E learning cycle framework aligns with the NGSS and can be used to develop phenomena-based lessons that highlight the science and engineering practices and cross cutting concepts within the discipline focus of science or engineering. Hands-on examples will be used to illustrate a 3D approach to your science classroom. Recommended for grades K-5.
 K-5 Learning from Student Work

What can teachers learn from examining student work? How can they adjust their own instruction to improve student understanding? This workshop is designed to support teachers as they learn how a collaborative process to analyze student work can provide insight into students’ thinking and inform their classroom practice. We will examine a variety of student work samples and classroom videos for evidence of student understanding, apply a range of rubrics, and review student-generated resources. Recommended for grades K-5 but all grade levels are welcome.

K-2 NGSS Connections for Grades K-2

Participants deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in life science, physical science, earth science, and engineering design. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations. Connections to the NGSS and three dimensional learning will be discussed. In small groups, teachers will examine strategies associated with integrating engineering into science instruction.

3-5 NGSS Connections for Grades 3-5

Participants deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in life science, physical science, earth science, and engineering design. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations. Connections to the NGSS and three dimensional learning will be discussed. In small groups, teachers will examine strategies associated with integrating engineering into science instruction.

6-8

NGSS Connections for Grades 6-8

Participants deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in life science, physical science, earth science, and engineering design. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations. Connections to the NGSS and three dimensional learning will be discussed. In small groups, teachers will examine strategies associated with integrating engineering into science instruction.

NGSS Connections: Engineering in the High School Life Science Classroom

Participants will deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in biology and environmental science. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations and support NGSS PE HS-LS4-6. Connections to the NGSS and three dimensional learning will be discussed. In small groups, teachers will examine strategies associated with integrating engineering into life science instruction.

NGSS Connections: Engineering in the High School Chemistry Classroom

Participants will deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in chemistry. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations. Connections to the NGSS and three dimensional learning will be discussed and will focus on NGSS PE HS-PS1-6. In small groups, teachers will examine strategies associated with integrating engineering into chemistry instruction.

Participants deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in biology and environmental science. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations. Participants deepen their own content and pedagogical expertise while engaging in sample classroom-ready investigations that develop students’ understanding of the core science ideas in earth science. Exemplar learning activities emphasize high-leverage science and engineering practices, such as modeling and evidence-based explanations. Connections to the NGSS and three dimensional learning will be discussed. In small groups, teachers will examine strategies associated with integrating engineering into science instruction.

Administrators Implementing the NGSS: What School Administrators Need to Know

With the adoption of the NGSS there has been a paradigm shift in the way science is being taught in K-12 classrooms.  No longer is it just the dispensing of science content knowledge.  The NGSS is all about three-dimensional learning, integrating science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts in earth, life and physical science. 

This workshop will give administrators the tools they need to be visionary curriculum leaders in the area of science. In addition to discussing the role of PLCs in science, the session will include topics such as curriculum mapping, formative assessment strategies and developing essential questions.

K-8 Informal Education

Implementing a STEM Summer Camp/Academy

 

Participants will learn how to engage K-8 students in creative and innovative pursuits appropriate for a STEM summer day camp. Participants will learn how to use the engineering design process to foster students’ 21st century skills while providing them with insight into STEM fields. Teachers will engage in hands-on activities drawn from freely available, exemplar out-of-school time curricula such as Engineering Adventures (grades 3-5), Design Squad (K-8), Family Engineering (K-5), and others. Included in the workshop will be information and tips for running a successful STEM camp such as how to create an exciting experience for youth, facilitate group dynamics, and provide meaningful information to students and their parents.
